Lichen-covered Granite Stones

Lichen-covered Granite Stones

Still mulling on how that could translate into our own floral design work, but I just loved this stone element in the garden at the Asticou Garden on Mount Desert Island, Maine. In this photo we can see lichen covered granite (this is such a Maine-ish material, we have granite all over the state and wonderful lichens in the forest that cover branches and rocks) incorporated into the garden two ways.

On one hand, it is displayed naturally in its rounded stone form, unshaped by human intervention, as you would see it in the forest. On the other, these two round stones rest upon carved granite 16″ granite tiles.

The juxtaposition of the two feels so surprising and refreshingly pure design-wise.
